Confined Spaces: Choose the Safe Way Out!

Warning! When entering or operating in a confined space, one of the worst mistakes that you can make is to ignore or not believe the information that your testing equipment is providing. If the alarm sounds, get out even if you do not notice anything wrong. Test equipment is designed to detect hazardous atmospheres long before you possibly can. Reacting correctly to the information that this equipment provides will save your life.

Remember, do not enter a confined space if your employer has not had a qualified person establish confined space entry procedures, if you have not been trained in these procedures and if the proper testing equipment is not being used as part of the confined space entry.

Follow these rules:

  • If it isn't tested;
  • If it isn't ventilated;
  • If you are not properly protected;
  • If there is no entry permit or procedure...STAY OUT!

First Aid - Beware the Summer Sun!

Heatstroke and heat exhaustion can be deadly. You have to react quickly to reduce body heat in the victim or life could be jeopardized.

Follow these guidelines:

  • Seek a cool location and elevate the victim's legs;
  • Remove or loosen clothing;
  • For a fully conscious person, give as much water as can be consumed;
  • If the casualty looses consciousness, seek medical attention immediately and continue to sponge with cool water in the armpits, neck and groin areas.

The proper application of first aid can save the life of a loved one, a co-worker or a complete stranger.

Stay Safe - Check The Label!

Any WHMIS controlled product received from a Canadian supplier must be labeled with a complete supplier label and be accompanied by a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). The label must have a "hatch-marked" border.

If the product is not properly labeled, do not use it!

Stay Safe - Keep AED Equipment Handy!

Automated External Defibrillator (AED) equipment is part of a "chain of survival" that involves other elements such as prompt 911 service - don't rely on the AED alone

Be sure that all medical equipment is maintained according to manufacturer's instructions and never let employees without proper training operate AED equipment.
